Everyone in my family loves to read - my youngest used to be not too much of a reader and only used to read the required 20 minutes per night, but now the reading bug has got her as well as she reads her High School Musical adventures.
Our elementary school has this reading program where kids 1st through 5th grade are supposed to read 20 minutes every night and then write a little paragraph (they call them BCRs - Brief Constructed Responses) answering a question related to the book they are reading. For example, find three character traits of some character in the book that is similar to someone you know. Or, find three words that you were unfamiliar with, write their meanings, and use them in a sentence.
I really like this program because it helps with reading comprehension. The kids have to keep the question of the week in mind as they go through their book. My older daughter reads more than an hour everyday and only used to write 20 minutes on her sheet because she thought if she puts the actuals number of minutes she read, they would never believe her :)
So, I was shocked to hear two parents complain at the back to school night last night that school is giving unfair workload to the 4th graders. They complained how 20 minutes per night was too much and then making them do homework on Sunday night is unfair?? At first I thought they were joking. But they weren't. The gentleman complaining said that school just made this requirements up and it is not the county mandate and that they need to rethink this?? I just could not believe it.
Maybe I am being judgmental and don't understand since my kids love to read and do this part of their homework willingly? But how can 20 minutes per night reading be bad for anyone? Shouldn't we make that much time for reading since in general kids spend a lot more time watching TV?

I hope the reading continues with you....
Thanks for bringing up this point - I didn't think about kids who might have trouble with reading. I knew one of the parent last night who was complaining, and know that her daughter didn't have any problem. I think her point was that she didn't want to be bothered with homework over the weekend. But I am not sure about the other father. But if that is the problem then it should be presented as such and not make the school system change something for all the kids across the board.
I am glad that your school system is working with your son. Thanks for stopping by :)
20mins is a cake walk i would say
So I feel…20 minutes for reading, out of 24 hrs of the day are nothing..!..especially looking at the long term benefits...
TV for only 20 minutes ??
My mother had a rule : No reading during food. She used to get mad when we asked for more books to read during vacation. She used to hide them, so that when we drive her crazy we will get a book..and then the world is at peace. This is apart from newspapers.
Each of us had library membership.. that means we would read our book, and our siblings..
But after turning into an adult.. i realised it is not about the number of books one reads. But analyzing the book, etc etc..
My rule is no TV during food :)
luckily for me swaraj is an ardent reader and so maybe its not difficult for us to enforce reading but i think if i were a parent of a child who hated reading..i would welcome such a program which would help the child grow better......
i love the concept of BCR...
