summer

I remember absolutely dying for that last day of school and waiting for the first day of summer vacation and wanting it more than anything else. I remember being bored out of my mind at the end of the summer and dying for the school to start. Oh, the extremes on the either side of the summer vacation. I never had any summer camps. My mom was my teacher/camp counselor. She taught me to make tea - indian style - when I was 8. She taught me to embroider when I was 12, she taught me to make goat kababs when I was 12. She taught me to crochet - I forget when. We used to play card games, board games, hand clapping games. There wasn't much on TV (man I sound ancient :) And we read a lot - a whole lot. I remember laying around and watching the fan whirl and thinking, just thinking for hours, because it was too hot to go outside and there was absolutely nothing else to do. At that point even the idea of going to school and doing homework sounded inviting. Fast forward a lot of years. Now m...

so honored

I am so in awe of Tessa at An Aerial Armadillo and I could not believe that she would bestow this honor upon me - so here I am, proudly displaying my award.

lemon love

Is it possible to fall in love with a plant? I ordered a Meyer lemon online and when it came my mother and I, couldn't keep our eyes off the plant. Momma even drove back with dad later that evening to show him the most beautiful plant. Dad couldn't figure out what the big deal was? Men!!!!! I want this plant to flourish and thrive. Have repotted it and put it in a sunny spot on my deck Silently prayed for its health and long life. I will let you know how it goes, but isn't this plant just adorable? And maybe, just maybe, it will be ready with its offspring, to make a perfect mojito for me, one late summer afternoon

My garden is happy today

Today is one of those most perfect days. The temperature is in the 70s. A caressing breeze is blowing. Clouds are being playful. Pansies are smiling Clematis is radiant at its purple best Hostas are unfurling And this other plant that I don't know the name of is being very cute as well :)

Mother's Day

On this Mother's day I remembered one random fact from long time ago. We moved to US in 1984. The first car we bought was a Chevy Chevette - all manual, no AC, no nothing - very basic. Then next year we bought a station wagon which was much nicer and had AC and everything. Mom used to drive the station wagon, dad used to drive the chevette. One day I realized that mom never turns her AC on - when asked why she said that she doesn't feel right turning the AC on when dad drives the car with no AC - made sense to me then - but now I think that is the most romantic thing ever. Eventually all our cars had AC, but I will always remember what mom said that day. ( image from wikipedia )

oh - my triceps......

Had a great yoga class today after work. I felt so light headed, kind of high, like I do after a glass or two of wine (it could be because I was starving). We were in warrior pose (I forget which kind of warrior), we had one hand in the front and one in the back. The yoga teacher says - the hand behind you is your past - you can let it go. The hand in front of you is your future - look towards that. Then he says - what is you present? "My quads" I yelped - because they were burning!!!! There are these muscles called triceps. I have sort of ignored them all my life, not really needed them, until the yoga teacher decided to call upon their service. Man are they still hurting. I thought they were glucose deprived. So I fed them half a frontega chicken sandwich from Panera and two glasses of wine - they are still complaining. I guess if you have been asleep for a long time and were unexpectedly thrown into hard labor -this is bound to happen - dolphin pose anyone? Anyways, li...

swine flu

Following is cut and paste from an email I received. I just signed the petition, I encourage you to do the same. No-one yet knows whether swine flu will become a global pandemic, but it is becoming clear where it came from – most likely a giant pig factory farm run by an American multinational corporation in Veracruz, Mexico.(1) These factory farms are disgusting and dangerous, and they're rapidly multiplying. Thousands of pigs are brutally crammed into dirty warehouses and sprayed with a cocktail of drugs -- posing a health risk to more than just our food -- they and their manure lagoons create the perfect conditions to breed dangerous new viruses like swine flu. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) must investigate and develop regulations for these farms to protect global health. Big agrobusiness will try to obstruct and scuttle any attempts at reform, so we need a massive outcry that health authorities can't ignore. Sign the pe...
